The English dictionary defines the following words as: Idle: lazy, indolent, not in use, unoccupied, purposeless. Son: male descendent or inheritor of a quality. While at first glance these two words would not seem to have anything in common, when put together, they make a pretty damn good Canadian rock band.

One trend that has become far too common in new rock and alternative music over the last several years is the lack of diversity in sound between different bands. We saw it with all the grunge bands that became popular in the early to mid ‘90s and then the nu-metal/rap rock movement of the early twenty-first century.

There is really no clear answer, but for decades now ever since rock music became popular, people have debated about what are the main ingredients for a good rock and roll band. Is it technical precision and musicianship? Is it flashy production? What about appearance? All of these things can be important, but what about bands like the Ramones…

When we think of Australia, usually a few key thoughts come to mind. We think of kangaroos, really tall cans of beer and most definitely Crocodile Dundee. But in terms of rock music, the only real bands that stick out are groups such as AC/DC, Midnight Oil, Silverchair, and more recently The Vines. While most of the aforementioned bands have long passed their prime…

For some time now in the world of alternative rock music, there seems to be a stigma attached to rock artists that originate from the country of Canada. Many fans of this genre of music have developed a bias that it is impossible, or at least highly unlikely, that any rock artist that was born and grew up in Canada is actually better or just as good…

One trend evident in the world of new rock the last few years has been the forming of brand new bands by previously famous names of the mid 1990s. We’ve seen it with Audioslave, Velvet Revolver, the new Richard Patrick, Dean and Robert Deleo project titled Army of Anyone and now, Gavin Rossdale’s new band called Institute.

Envision Rush and Yes having a guilty, lust-filled affair resulting in a bastard lovechild. The name of that child? Coheed and Cambria. A humble band from humble beginnings in Nyack, New York, they have created an international stir with a unique sound and story. Though the band usually stays true to their prearranged instruments, they will occasionally…

It’s a safe bet that unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past year, you’ve heard of the band The Arcade Fire. From music critics around the globe to musicians such as Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, David Bowie and the members of Coldplay, The Arcade Fire has been hailed as the most interesting and innovative rock group to come along in years.

In most instances three years is not a heck of a lot of time for a band to form, record two records, and get signed to a major record label. Nevertheless, a Tennessee based quartet of zealous young musicians known as 10 Years, have seemingly crammed a decade’s worth of experience and musical maturity into a short but intense three year span.

Although the phrase New York City can bring to mind images of a cluttered web of heaven-bound skyscrapers, constant yellow taxi cab-infused traffic jams, and hoards of totally diverse people roaming a labyrinth of numerically labelled streets, this majestic American city can also be known for its dualistic mix of light and dark (good and evil).

If you’ve been a fan of Canadian new rock over the last ten years then you are bound to remember the band Econoline Crush. The Vancouver based band formed in the early 1990s in Seattle, Washington when the eventual lead singer Trevor Hurst answered an ad for a new band in a local newspaper. After the band formed, Hurst and his four bandmates uprooted…

It is amusingly ironic (and borderline eerily coincidental) how aptly titled the band Illbreak actually is. This group’s name invariably boats a hilarious double meaning; one which refers not only to their super-fortunate and perfectly-timed big music break (details forthcoming), but also to the refreshing type of sound that they will inevitably carry with them into the rock music world.

Unbeknownst to many people, one of the hottest and fastest rising new rock acts in Canada is a five piece band by the name of Tupelo Honey. Unfortunately however, at the moment there does not appear to exist a whole lot of information about this particular group. Accordingly, we here at PGA feel that it is our duty to compile what we have…

As you lay there on the piping hot sand just a few metres away from the calm sparkling ocean, the sun’s beautiful rays wrap your body in a tingling blanket of warmth. You are relaxed and at peace with your surroundings, and furthermore with yourself. This my friend is sunny Florida, and this is paradise.
