St. Catharines, Ontario-based artist Dre Dupuis is back with his new single “Smoking Man.” Recorded at his new studio on a Tascam 488 tape machine, the track stays true to Dupuis’ do-it-yourself attitude, with Dupuis performing each instrument himself, one at a time.

Dupuis explains:

“I moved my studio out of my laundry room and into a bigger space I share with some friends. It’s been a positive shift for me having more space to work with. The room really lends itself to a, dare I say, cleaner sound through my recorder. But for this song I said screw it and distorted everything anyways. And I’m sure I’ll do it again.”

“Smoking Man” demonstrates Dupuis’ one-man band approach, starting with drums and overdubbing guitar/bass/vocals afterwards. Akin to one of his favourite bands, Guided by Voices, Dupuis recorded quickly and embraced imperfections, pulling off a self-proclaimed rocker anthem that’s sure to please any Bee Thousand/Alien Lanes lover out there. No editing or tuning. One-hundred percent analog.

With all that said, you may be wondering, “Who is the Smoking Man?” To keep it short and sweet, he’s one of the friends we’ve made along the way.
