When it comes to their music and the vision behind it, Sleep Nation maintains a forward-thinking, progressive view the whole way through. They are building on that vision today with the debut of their new album The Famine. This is just one part of a multi-concept narrative project that the duo is rolling out. It will be followed by two more albums, expected to be released before the end of 2026.

The concept behind the record is centered around the narrative that Sleep Nation’s reign has fallen apart, which has ushered in the ruthless forces of Famine, Death, and War. Stylistically, the album marks a new era for the band. The release features a darker backstory, and the traditional rock elements of the group are interspersed with more modern production elements. There is a futuristic sound to the album, while remaining faithful to the conventions of rock n’ roll.

Lead singer Bran Merritt comments:

“While doomscrolling one day, I stumbled across Stephen Wilson Jr. and was immediately blown away by his dark, nylon-string acoustic take on Americana and country. I wanted to explore that sound without launching an entirely separate band, which led to the creation of the Four Horsemen series. Following our electronic/industrial debut, The Spaceman – Conquest, Famine serves as the second installment. The record features vocal contributions from the Sisters Mann, along with Flip Cooper (formerly of Taco Mouth) on bass.”

Maintaining a stylistically progressive approach to their music has always been central to who Sleep Nation is. Led by singer Bran Merritt, the group has always been focused on the future of rock n’ roll. That’s a big part of the reason why their sound is always evolving, not just from album to album, but even song to song. They take the production of their music very seriously, which meshes well with the science fiction influence inherent in their music. Their songs often incorporate heavy guitar elements with dark-groove rock.

The basis of the band is structured around mixing the best of sound and technology. Rather than just throwing songs at the wall and seeing what sticks, there is a conceptual foundation to everything they do. With how far Sleep Nation reaches as a musical act, it’s no wonder that Merritt has also performed as the guitarist of a Nine Inch Nails tribute band. He has a clear, progressive vision for the band that is both ambitious and determined.
