Alternative pop artist Gregory Douglass unveils his interpretation of Tori Amos’ “Tear in Your Hand,” a track from his upcoming album, AMATEUR, slated for release in November 2026.

Douglass says, “This version honors the woman who taught me how to write songs that matter. It’s a song I’ve turned to in every major life transition – a breakup anthem for letting go of the familiar and stepping into the unknown. ‘Tear in Your Hand’ is my first-ever recorded cover of a Tori Amos song, despite her being one of the most formative influences on my voice, songwriting, and musical identity. I was drawn to the song for the way it holds intimacy, heartbreak, and emotional ambiguity at once, and approached it as a deeply personal interpretation through my own voice.”

Douglass reached a wider global audience in 2019 when his song “Alibis” was featured in the Netflix series The Rain. During his 25 years as a musician, he has released ten studio albums on his own and worked with producers from around the world. He has also performed alongside Grace Potter, Jason Mraz, Regina Spektor, Patty Griffin, They Might Be Giants, and Vermont artist Anaïs Mitchell (Hadestown).

“Tear in Your Hand” opens on an elegant, evocative piano topped by hushed voices. Douglass’ voice enters, slightly weathered but gorgeously expressive and dripping with passionate emotion. Almost gospel-like backing harmonies add sumptuous, haunting tones, light but oh-so effective and poignant.

“All the world is / Dangling, dangling, dangling for me, darling / You don’t know the power that you have / With that tear in your hand / Tear in your hand.”

This is a grand version of a great song. Delivered with urgency and ardor, “Tear in Your Hand” finds Gregory Douglass turning his soul inside out without apology.
