Deady – ‘HUNKA JUNK’ [Album Review]
Ragged and sprawling, yet accessible, with ‘HUNKA JUNK’ (Romanus Records), Deady rolls out record-collector-like music marinated in unease.
On HUNKA JUNK, Louisville garage-punk crew Deady tosses post-punk tension, hardcore impact, and noise-rock abrasion into the same dented blender, and presses the button marked frappe.
The album, tracked and mixed by the band’s Chyppe Crosby, captures Deady in motion: one moment all jagged volume and splintered textures, the next slipping into quiet acoustic layers, every turn enhanced by the group’s prankish, off-kilter personality.
The restless approach has also made Deady a difficult act to pin down onstage. Drawing from the spirit of Brainiac, The Slits, Fugazi, Bad Religion, and Coneheads, the band has become a road-tested live wildcard, sharing bills with FEAR, Lightning Bolt, Water From Your Eyes, Snooper, and Shannon & the Clams.
Entry points on the album include “SYSTEMATIC SLAUGHTER,” full of tight, raw guitars riding nasty percussion. Mandy Keathley’s vocals convey a deliciously psycho edge on the verge of going full fanatic.
On “HOT DAMN,” a fast starter of a song, things blast off from the get-go: searing, buzzsaw guitars, smash and crash drumming, and a frenetic melody topped by Keathley’s cat on a hot tin roof vocals. Her voice is the lip of the razor.
“SPINNING ROOMS” does just that: takes listeners on a tilt-a-whirl ride that whirls and swirls with vicious energy. A personal favorite because Keathley’s vocals are reminiscent of Stevie Nicks, “LOUISVILLE” slows things down a bit, revealing gorgeous folk-rock flavors.

Another favorite because of its darker, heavier textures and on-the-edge sensation, “GUTTER KID” pushes hard and conveys a visceral, primitive perception. “GOODNIGHT BITCH,” akin to “LOUISVILLE,” summons up suggestions of Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks. Keathley’s chameleon-like voice is fantastically expressive.
Rough, dirty, growling guitars infuse the title track with viscous tones and an angular feel, like falling off a roof into a dry swimming pool – risky, black, and thrilling all at the same time.
Ragged and sprawling, yet accessible, with HUNKA JUNK, Deady rolls out record-collector-like music marinated in unease.
