Thavoron – “Blurry tattoos” [Song Review]

Seattle artist, producer, and songwriter Thavoron unveils her latest single/music video, “Blurry tattoos,” via Trailing Twelve Records.

Thavoron explains, “‘Blurry tattoos’ is a song I’ve always meant to write. Growing up, in the darkest pits of my depression, I found myself yearning to something akin to a water molecule – something without direct proclamation of emotion, sight, or sound, even though water is still so vital and lively. There’s something beautiful, inspiring, and tragic about relating to something inanimate. For me, it became my ex’s old, faded, blurry tattoos.”

Written, performed, and produced by Thavoron, “Blurry tattoos” uses the image of a fading tattoo to examine love, identity, and self-worth as they evolve. What was once clear and meticulously preserved slowly softens into part of the body’s overall history. Instead of fighting that fading, the song accepts it, turning loss into a quiet kind of freedom.

“Blurry tattoos” opens with a TMZ-like report, talking about Thavoron’s lifestyle, emotional status, and tattoos. The report ends, followed by lingering, hovering R&B tones riding an industrial-lite rhythm. Luminous accents add gleaming, ringing splashes, as Thavoron’s lush, murmuring vocals give the lyrics dreamy surfaces. Airy vocal harmonies wrap Thavoron’s voice in translucent filaments.

The video, directed by Maddie Ludgate, depicts Thavoron and other dancers rehearsing a sensual dance wearing clear helmets. The video concludes with Thavoron in an open field as traffic passes nearby. The closing scenes project home-video-quality footage, signifying diminishment.

With its lustrous, gossamer textures, the alt-R&B singer’s “Blurry tattoos” probes the aftermath of intimacy with empathy.
