Taranis Premiere Their Menacing Single, “Stupid People Ruin My Life!!!”
Featuring the blood-curdling screams of frontwoman Caroline Deen, Taranis premiere their new single “Stupid People Ruin My Life!!!.”
There is something so pertinent about Taranis lead singer Caroline Deen’s blood-curdling scream that comes ten seconds into the band’s new single “Stupid People Ruin My Life!!!.”
Maybe we’ve never actually shrieked in the same way, but it’s an emotion every person has felt at one time or another when they’ve just had enough of everything. That’s kind of how this Oklahoma City metalcore band is feeling these days, which is certainly reasonable and relatable given the state of the world these days. They are pissed off, and they want you to know that they know how you are feeling.
Discussing “Stupid People Ruin My Life!!!,” Deen comments:
“We feel like this song is one of the more palatable songs on the album. It’s a song you can easily headbang to, and it has a strong and clear message. “We were all just angry at the state of the world, the music industry, and everything. We wanted to make a ‘protest song’ in the same way Rage Against the Machine would. This song was the first Taranis song to be written on an eight-string guitar. The chorus uses heavy synth layering and intricate vocal harmonies to create a ‘wall of sound’ effect to appropriately match the vibe.”
A young group of musicians, all around 20, formed Taranis in 2021 in Oklahoma City. Aside from frontwoman Deen, the band also features guitarist Jackson Wagner and bassist Asa Lake. They describe their sound as “girlypop-core,” which is basically their own brand of thrashy metalcore. It is meant to be fun, unique, and untraditional, borrowing from hardcore and electronic music.
Visually, they use bright pink visuals and feminine imagery to contrast the dark, brooding conventions of heavy rock and metal. They take their art seriously, but they also want it to be inviting and unintimidating. Their visual identity is just as important as the music itself. Despite the world’s many problems and the anger that accompanies them, it’s also essential to maintain positive energy and a sense of humour to help us all cope.
