Darren Flynn has taken an interesting approach to his brand-new EP, Pinebox. Rather than get hung up on how he wants to present it to you, the listener, he’s giving you some freedom to enjoy it in the way you would like to.

You won’t hear any grand pronouncements coming from Flynn about how it’s meant to be listened to as a whole, and that the tracks are ordered the way they are for a reason. In this instance, he’d like to give you the choice to experience this the way you see fit. There are no accompanying instructions. Just a group of songs meant for you to experience as you wish.

In elaborating on this point, Flynn states:

“When I was recording this EP, I got some feedback from a friend to the effect that the songs on it were a bit too disparate, not really ‘of a piece,’ as it were, but I think that’s ok, you know? Modern life, and especially social media, has us jackknifing from comedy to real-life-horror to recipes for Brazilian candy all in the flick of a finger. Each one of these songs is its own vignette, self-contained. Who says you have to listen to all of them in one go? Listen to the one that fits your headspace right now.”

Pinebox is a representation of Darren Flynn’s headspace from when he was recording these songs. Featuring five new tracks, he wrote the EP with the intention of paring things back and not overcomplicating things. Each song has a relatively simple arrangement. He wanted his background as a roots-based singer-songwriter to shine through clearly to the listener. Within the five songs is a cover of U2’s iconic 1980s hit “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.” It emphasizes Flynn’s affection for both Americana and Irish music, as he blends together both styles in his own take on one of the most well-known rock songs of the last half-century. The EP also features bluesy Americana influences, Irish folk-focused protest music, and country pop.

With his open-minded approach and ability to hit on many different musical styles, even in the scope of one song, Flynn is an artist who is easy to get on to.
