Aronieme – “Hallow” [Song Review]
On “Hallow,” the Calgary artist Aronieme recontextualizes alternative art rock, fusing dark wave and dream pop into a unique, captivating sound.
The motion of Aronieme’s new single, “Hallow,” brings to mind an approaching storm: mystical, dark, and charged at the edges. The Calgary singer, songwriter, and producer favors atmosphere over easy hooks, building songs out of shadowy electronics, heavy mood, and a voice conveying more than melody.
Since releasing “Take the Ride,” Aronieme has followed with a steady run of Bandcamp-only singles, including the fiery “Cut Me Into Pieces,” and now “Hallow.” Taken together, they reveal an artist establishing a new identity: dramatic, nocturnal, and still coming into focus.
Aronieme is a jazz-trained vocalist with extensive experience in performing and recording. “Take the Ride,” “Cut Me Into Pieces,” and “Hallow” lean into gothic alternative and dream-pop textures, closer in spirit to Chelsea Wolfe, Emma Ruth Rundle, and Florence & the Machine than to anything conventional.
The appeal of Aronieme’s sound is found in the tension between polish and darkness. The arrangements suggest precision, then take on darkness.
Black, thrumming tones open “Hallow,” riding an industrial-lite darkwave, pulsing rhythm. Aronieme’s enchanting, ethereal voice, at once portentous, dreamy, and oh-so haunting, floats, flows, and glides on mystical surfaces. There’s a numinous, almost primitive, allure to her vocals – beckoning, cautioning, presaging.
