Track-by-Track: The Wise Man’s Fear Assess Their New EP ‘Apocrypha’

If you like your music hard with a story behind it, then The Wise Man’s Fear is the band for you. The fantasy-core band emerge with another chapter in their story with the release of their new EP Apocrypha, via Theoria Records. This is a collection of new tracks related to their 2015 full-length album Castle in the Clouds. The band creates vast, expansive worlds that blend together epic storytelling with blasts of modern metal. Much of their inspiration comes from the world of high fantasy, mythology, and emotional introspection. With their music, they build worlds that feel like you are reading the best fantasy novel you’ve ever picked up.

“Apocrypha is a collection of newly uncovered chapters relating to 2015’s allegorical Castle in the Clouds saga. The songs cast new light on familiar characters, introduce chapters-in-between-chapters, and expand the strange universe known as Pneuma.

“We join our protagonist, a knight with no name (representative of mankind), as he embarks on a noble quest to discover a legendary ‘castle in the clouds’ (and metaphorically the meaning of life).

“The story of Apocrypha begins with ‘Die Alone,’ a declaration of war upon the knight from Chaotica himself, one of Pneuma’s most notorious villains and evil spirit of the sea. Chaotica is the embodiment of fear and chaos and is set on preventing the knight from succeeding in finding a higher purpose.

“The knight rises up to meet Chaotica’s challenge, but in order to face his enemy, he must first sail deep into uncharted waters, from which no man has returned alive. To make the perilous journey, he recruits the help of a crew worthy of legend in ‘Edge of the Map.’

“Setting out to sail is not only a declaration of defiance, but at the same time a nail in the coffin of the tenuous romance the knight shares with his love interest, Rose. In ‘A Fragile Flame,’ the knight laments the impossible sacrifice required to complete his quest, one that is entirely separate from the war being waged in the physical world around him.

“Finally, after defeating Chaotica at sea and barely escaping with his life, the knight must confront him once more at the gates of the Castle in the Clouds. Their armies clash in a bloody battle for the ages. ‘For The Realm’ chronicles the vicious conflict while also portraying a painful rebirth the knight must undergo in order to be found worthy of entering the castle. He must shed his mortal self, killing his ego to undergo the enlightenment required to finally enter the castle and understand the meaning of his life.

“From love to enlightenment, to a daring heist on the high seas, to a wretched manifesto drawn from Pneuma’s greatest villain, Apocrypha is rich with moments that add character and nuance to the world of the Codex Trilogy.”
