The Flaming Lips Take Fans on a Psychedelic Trip at Halifax Piece Hall [Photos]

Completely bonkers is the only way to describe an evening spent with Oklahoma’s finest psychedelic rockers The Flaming Lips. Lighting up the Yorkshire town with their wacky, arty rock show, the American outfit live up to expectations with a show that leaves you partly in awe and partly scratching your head at what you have just witnessed.

That being said, while The Flaming Lips might be an acquired taste, the packed courtyard shows that there are plenty of music fans who have been bitten by this psychedelic bug. For a band that has been peddling their trippy, quirky wares for nearly four decades now, to still pack out venues of this stature with a sound that is far from mainstream is something of an achievement that deserves applauding.

Dwarfed by giant inflatable robots and huge retina-searing video screens, bare-footed frontman Wayne Coyne leads the band like an illuminated showman swinging a light over his head with a manic grin across his face. Hypnotizing the crowd with the likes of “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1 & 2,” their Chemical Brothers cover “The Golden Path,” and “It’s Summertime,” the blend of trippy rock and attention-grabbing theatrics has the undivided attention of this crowd from the get-go.

It’s hard to put into words what you will experience if you go to see The Flaming Lips. Obviously, if you aren’t a fan already, little is going to change your opinion of the Oklahoma band, but here at The Piece Hall, in front of a few thousand adoring worshipers, The Flaming Lips could do no wrong.
