Halfway Down Reel You in with Their Single “Want You” [Premiere]
St. Paul, Minnesota band Halfway Down show their appreciation for Y2K pop-punk with the premiere of their new single “Want You.”
One of the greatest attributes of pop-punk bands like Halfway Down is the passion inherent in their music. The band is at their most candid today with the premiere of their new single “Want You.” The song features all of the top attributes of Y2K-era pop punk bands with that same degree of fervour and energy.
It doesn’t hide what it is, a bright, big-sounding pop-punk song about the urgency to reconnect with someone after a long period of time. It’s very much focused on the chorus, simple yet effective, and also successful in getting straight to the point. “Want You” feels like a good summer tune, a more passionate, exciting time of the year when you feel a greater need to connect with others.
Discussing the song, Blake Deneweth states:
“‘Want You’ is the most direct song we’ve written. There’s not a huge metaphor to hide behind. It’s about looking at someone and feeling something come back that you thought was gone. The whole song is built around that simple pull of wanting someone, needing them, and wondering if maybe all the bad timing and bad luck still led back to the right place. We wanted the chorus to feel almost stupid-simple in the best way, like the kind of thing you hear once and already know how to sing back.”
The emotional urgency you hear in “Want You” is at the epicentre of what Halfway Down is as a band. They’ve been at it for a few years now, toiling away, working their way up in the scene in their hometown of St. Paul, Minnesota. What people love about the band is their abundance of hooks. You can always count on a hook-heavy song, bursting with energy and emotion. As a songwriting unit, they opt for a more unpolished sound, relying instead on their aforementioned passion for writing and performing. With each passing release, Halfway Down continues to expand their fanbase, and today they emerge with one of their brightest, finest moments.
