West End Phoenix Celebrates 10 Years with Palais Royale Benefit Concert

Toronto independent newspaper The West End Phoenix is marking its 10th anniversary with a major benefit concert at Palais Royale on September 25th, celebrating a decade of community-driven journalism and independent media success in Canada.

Titled “The Seasons in the Sun Concert,” the event will feature performances from a diverse lineup of acclaimed Canadian artists, including Ron Sexsmith, Shakura S’Aida, Tom Wilson, Lucas Silveira, Vivek Shraya, Jason Collett, Christa Couture, Tara Slone, and Dave Bidini. Legendary broadcaster Ron MacLean will host the evening, while Chief R. Stacey Laforme will deliver the opening land acknowledgement.

The concert takes place at Toronto’s historic Palais Royale, located at 1601 Lake Shore Blvd. W., with doors opening at 6:30 pm. Early-bird tickets are priced at 77 dollars until August 1st, after which admission increases to 90 dollars. Proceeds from the event will directly support independent journalism and the continued operation of The West End Phoenix.

Founded in 2017 by writer, musician, and Rheostatics co-founder Dave Bidini, The West End Phoenix began as a grassroots effort to restore local journalism after neighbourhood newspapers disappeared from Toronto’s west end. Before its first issue was ever printed, volunteers canvassed communities door-to-door, selling subscriptions and proving there was still demand for thoughtful, locally focused reporting.

The paper now reaches more than 40,000 readers per issue and has distributed over two million dollars to contributors during its first decade.

The publication’s contributor network has included major Canadian voices such as Margaret Atwood, Alex Lifeson, Michie Mee, Eternity Martis, Claudia Dey, Michael Winter, and Chief Ladybird. Its editorial mission continues to emphasize representation and mentorship, with more than half of reporting assignments commissioned to journalists from equity-deserving groups.

Beyond the printed page, The West End Phoenix has expanded into live events, public conversations, performances, and civic engagement initiatives, becoming a cultural hub for Toronto’s west end community and a model for sustainable independent journalism.

The September 25th concert serves as both a fundraiser and a celebration of the publication’s resilience during an era when local news organizations across North America continue to shutter.
