Siege Perilous Powers Up for Their “Eschaton” Lyric Video [Premiere]

There’s a significant magnitude when it comes to a band like Siege Perilous. One listen to “Eschaton,” and you’ll understand what we mean. This is massive-sounding music, meant to sound monumental. It feels like you’re ready to go to war when you hear these massive riffs and the supersized presentation of it all. It’s just one of the battle-driven tracks you’ll find on the band’s new album Becoming the Dragon. The song’s tone implies the kind of largeness which the Colorado power metallers work towards. It makes sense when you consider the group’s history.

Siege Perilous came together via the camaraderie of live-action roleplay (LARP), which blends improvisational theatre with physical gaming and costumes. That influence plays out within the cinematic arrangements typical of their songs. The narratives of the songs are mythical and adventurous, and there is a certain daring element and boldness apparent in their sound.

Vocalist Shaugnessy McDaniel comments:

“We love that this lyric video gets to hit the cosmic level and really bring things to an incredibly epic and very power metal conclusion. It gives us a chance to wrap up the story of the ‘Child of Prophecy’ with a very surprising and grandiose ending.”

Siege Perilous are as much storytellers as they are musicians. That’s essentially how Becoming the Dragon plays out. The band’s most ambitious album to date, it follows the “Child of Prophecy” through the many stages of the hero’s tale. Through destiny, denial, tragedy and transformation, the tale culminates in the hero’s ascension into the dragon itself. The path leads to the realization that the only way to overcome it is to embrace it. There are more general life lessons that can be gleaned from these songs, which is a large part of their purpose.

The album also features a couple of special guest appearances. Fabio Lione of Rhapsody and Angra, and Kristin Starkey of Twilight Force and Temperance, both make their presence felt. They help elevate the emotional and narrative scope of the album. It was a great honour, particularly for Siege Perilous lead singer Shaughnessy McDaniel, to get to play alongside musicians who were so influential to him.

Becoming the Dragon is a supersized album from a supersized band. In an era where song lyrics are often almost entirely overlooked, Siege Perilous remind you of the importance of not just the music, but also the motif and the spirit of it all.
