Peter Manning Robinson – “Bent Out of Shape” [Song Review]
A searching and emotionally charged track, “Bent Out of Shape” finds Peter Manning Robinson returning to a neoclassical sound.
Los Angeles-based pianist, Emmy Award–winning and multi–BMI Award–winning composer, inventor of the Refractor Piano™, and accomplished vegan chef Peter Manning Robinson recently released his new single, “Bent Out of Shape,” a track lifted from his upcoming album Excursions.
Written during an episode of both personal and public turmoil, “Bent Out of Shape” explores the frontiers of spiritual, mental, and especially emotional stability in a world informed by chaos.
On “Bent Out of Shape,” Robinson shifts direction, moving away from an opening out of sound to a sense of simplicity and cleanness. There’s a nimbleness to the melody, a kind of weightless feel that reveals itself in the sparkle of elegant surfaces. The satisfying aesthetics of the song come from Robinson’s skillful care for textural nuances and tonal expressions: depth, resonance, and aural impact.
The flow of the tune is instinctive and effortless. Robinson avoids the traps of hyperbole and melodrama. Instead, the motion of the music ebbs and rises on brilliant colors that change hues organically, as if responding to some psychic power.
