Mighty Joe Belson – “The Process Of Individuation” [Song Review]
With its quiet, philosophical approach, Mighty Joe Belson’s “The Process Of Individuation” redirects ambient jazz from a solipsistic angle.
On “The Process Of Individuation,” minimalist ambient composer Mighty Joe Belson turns inward, tracing a private, slow-burning journey shaped by Jung’s idea of bringing the unconscious into alignment with the self.
Belson explains the song in explicitly dreamlike terms: “‘The Process Of Individuation’ is a work born of dreams. I have always been fascinated by dreams and their interpretation and often hear the beginnings of my music in them. After learning about Carl Jung’s ideas concerning Individuation and self-actualization, I started paying attention to them even more. I really believe that if you listen to your dreams, your life can be better.”
The track also marks a left turn in Belson’s catalog. After releases that moved through electronica, guitar-led instrumentals, and a pair of well-regarded classic jazz albums, this solo piano piece lands with a different kind of gravity. Even so, it still belongs to his larger project: making narrative music that speaks without ever needing words.
As a composition, “The Process Of Individuation” maps the sensation of a mind studying its own depths. It starts with a modest, cycling piano chord, then gradually accrues melodic detail until the emotional picture grows dense and unsettled. What first registers as serene begins to fray at the edges. Beauty gives way to pressure, the melody buckles, and the music mirrors a psyche pushed into overload. Finally, clarity breaks through.

The revelation, in the end, is found in the opening gesture. When the piece circles back to those first chords and quietly dissolves, it arrives by way of detour.
