Landroid – ‘Constellation’ [Album Review]

On Constellation, the California duo Landroid arrives with a long player of singular scope and control, one that treats atmosphere as a structure. The album opens outward, yet its real force lies in how closely it binds the universal to the private, revolving around questions of inheritance, choice, and intimacy.

What distinguishes the release is the discipline behind it. Rather than assembling a sequence of evocative textures, Landroid shapes the album with patience. Ideas of legacy, fate, and emotional continuity appear with quiet insistence, giving the songs the weight of being inhabited.

Constellation occupies the space where dream-pop vapor, synth-built art rock, and wistful psychedelia meet. Their arrangements favor breadth and clarity: luminous keyboards, chiming guitars, and relentless rhythmic currents move through the album with a poise that feels expansive.

Still, the album remains grounded in being human. Its most affecting passages dwell on the tension between self-determination and inherited behavior patterns, on the uneasy realization that the patterns we think we are resisting are often the ones that define us. The juxtaposition of grandeur and vulnerability gives the album significance.

Sung by guest vocalist Nigel Roman, “Autonomous” stages its reckoning at the furthest imaginable remove: a man in his final moments, adrift in space, watching the Earth vanish as he is drawn toward the sun. The song turns that stark premise into a way to examine survival, memory, and the possibility that what we call choice or free will may be little more than genetic programming.

“Hank the Dragon” stands out for the ease with which it marries adventure and emotions. Built on a restless synth-rock rhythm, the song proffers a question about whether love can survive the erosion of the very qualities that first made it possible. The result is both incisive and important.

“Stay” begins in a hush of light textures, breath-soft vocals, rippling synthesizers, and a patient rhythmic undertow, followed by gradually taking on more imposing dimensions. By the time it reaches its summit, the song has become an eloquent study in the excitement and terror of surrendering to love.

“Say My Name” moves with a softer kind of confidence. Opening on click-clacking percussion and a gliding bassline. An electronic futuristic groove enters, conjuring a mirage-like soundscape.

Constellation finds Landroid giving listeners a richly imagined and carefully executed album, one evoking a nuanced grace.
