CJ Brewer Releases Honest New Single “No Shame”
Greenville, South Carolina singer-songwriter CJ Brewer is back with a brand new single, “No Shame.” The track marks his third release since his personal rebrand and he creates it utilizing a blend of alternative rock, atmospheric soundscapes, and honest storytelling.
Thematically, the song takes a look at Brewer’s experiences growing up Catholic and witnessing the shame that was often attached to sexuality. According to Brewer, “No Shame” is a song about “. . . the shame put on people to suppress their sexuality that I witnessed.” He states further, “I wanted to reflect on some of the experiences I had growing up in the church that weren’t so healthy, and how much sexuality was and is stigmatized by religious figures and in certain ‘spiritual’ spaces.”
Writing the song helped him work through those experiences alongside hopes of connecting with others who have felt judged for who they are.
Simultaneously, “No Shame” tells the story of suppressed feelings and emotional conflict. Lines like “Been feeling you for quite some time and I can’t seem to quench” and the repeated chorus of “No shame” help drive home the song’s message of acceptance.
Brewer says one of his favorite things about the release is how it combines themes of love and religion while asking an important question: “How do we process harmful experiences that were labeled as morally just under the guise of religious purity?”
