SOMYO’s latest single, “FORGET TO LOVE,” is a contagious, dreamy dance-pop song with beaucoup momentum: the kick drum keeps thumping, pushing relentlessly forward. Made with Toronto producer/songwriter Sugar Jesus (Andrei Basirov), it turns heartbreak into delicious, chrome-edged impetus.

The hook revolves around the idea that moving on isn’t always possible. SOMYO sings from that floaty in-between place where you’re “fine,” technically, but you’re still checking the rearview mirror of your emotions every ten seconds.

The melodrama is measured rather than kitschy and cloying, so it feels just right. The topline is built for singing along – car-window therapy – yet it avoids the generic ‘sad banger’ pitfall by evoking your own quixotic mistakes, the crazy things you’ve done because of love.

Basirov’s production features a delightful harmonic architecture: a throbbing bassline that throbs steadily, synths fading into pastel shimmers, drops that arrive under exquisite control. For some reason, SOMYO’s vocals summon up sensations of The Allan Parsons Project – soft, silky vocals full of almost-sighing tones. It’s one of those oh-so spellbinding voices that listeners find irresistible.

SOMYO (formerly Barrett Crake) has amassed more than 11 million streams by treating dance music with respect and simplicity.  The lyrics reveal emotional honesty: “I’ve been trying to hurt myself / When I’m dreaming did I forget to love you.
