The SOCAN Foundation announce the launch of the inaugural South Asian Music Prize, presented by SiriusXM Dhamaka, a new national award recognizing emerging South Asian music creators in Canada, shaping the country’s diverse and evolving musical landscape.

Created to celebrate artistic excellence, elevate underrepresented voices, and support meaningful career development, the South Asian Music Prize arrives at a pivotal moment of growth and global visibility for South Asian music and culture. The initiative reflects SOCAN Foundation’s commitment to ensuring Canada’s music ecosystem continues to recognize and invest in the creators shaping its future.

SiriusXM Dhamaka, on Channel 769, showcases everything from Bollywood to bhangra to hip-hop and more. It is the home for South Asian music that breaks boundaries and spans generations.

The submission deadline is June 1, 2026. Full guidelines and applications for the South Asian Music Prize are now open. To apply, enter here.

One recipient will be selected by a jury of music industry professionals to receive a $10,000 cash prize, visibility through the award’s national press campaign, travel support, and ongoing career development support from SOCAN Foundation.

Eligible applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents, SOCAN members, and identify as South Asian. Submissions are open to music creators of all genres, including solo artists, songwriters, composers, and collectives (all members must meet eligibility requirements). Applicants must submit original works composed within the past two years to which they have meaningfully contributed and hold a share of ownership.

Said Charlie Wall-Andrews, Executive Director of SOCAN Foundation:

“Canada’s South Asian music community is driving important creative energy and cultural innovation, both here at home and on the global stage. The South Asian Music Prize reflects a commitment to supporting emerging music creators whose artistry, perspectives, and contributions are helping shape the future of music in Canada and beyond. At a time when visibility, opportunity, and meaningful support matter deeply, this prize is about creating space for growth and recognition. Sincere thanks to SiriusXM Canada for partnering with SOCAN Foundation to help make this possible.”

Said Michelle Mearns, SVP, Programming & Operations, SiriusXM Canada:

“We’re proud to support the South Asian Music Prize and celebrate the depth and diversity of South Asian music. Through SiriusXM Dhamaka, we’ve made a commitment to amplifying Canadian South Asian artists and connecting audiences to the sounds shaping the culture today. This award is a natural extension of that mission—recognizing excellence and bringing this vibrant music to an even broader audience.”

The recipient of the inaugural South Asian Music Prize will be announced later this year.

Born in 2003, V13 was a socio-political website that morphed into PureGrainAudio in 2005 and spent 15 years developing into one of Canada's (and the world’s) leading music sites. On the eve of the site’s 15th anniversary, a full relaunch and rebrand took us back to our roots and opened the door to a full suite of Music, Entertainment, and cultural content.
