Punk comes in a variety of packages, with Scarboro’s punk more of the classic and intense variety. That’s been evident since the band took shape nearly 15 years ago. We helped premiere the band’s 2024 single “New Normal,” and we are back today with the premiere of “Got Soul.”

The song will be featured on the band’s new sophomore LP Hate Season, due out on April 17th via Sell the Heart Records and WTF Records in the EU. Featuring a very relatable topic, this is one of those tracks that will get the whole crowd going. “Got Soul” is a nice crossover between Scarboro’s classic punk and more radio-friendly indie rock tendencies.

Bassist Jack Counce, who wrote the song, states: “I wrote ‘Got Soul?’ during a time when I felt completely hollowed out by a toxic relationship. I didn’t feel like myself,  more like an empty shell caught in a loop of obsession: ‘running through regrets, swimming through subtexts in my mind.’ I was replaying every moment, every word, trying to make sense of things I couldn’t control.

“The chorus is about facing the blunt truth that life is short and unpredictable — life’s a bitch, and then you die. You don’t get answers, and you can’t waste what time you have stressing over things you can’t control. You take the steps you can, you let go of what you need to, and allow yourself to actually live and be open to whatever comes next.

“In the breakdown, I say, ‘I didn’t go through so much pain and death just to be dried up and fucked with nothing left.’ That’s about losing both of my parents — the grief, the rebuilding, the way that loss reshaped me. I’d already survived some of the hardest moments of my life, and I realized I couldn’t keep letting someone drain what little I had left.

“By the end, when I scream ‘I’ve got a soul,’ it’s me taking myself back. Remembering I’m not hollow. That everything I’ve survived still means something. ‘Got Soul?’ is raw, vulnerable, and loud — a song about surviving grief, breaking out of someone else’s chaos, and finally stepping back into myself.”

Featuring 14 new tracks, Hate Season was recorded by the band between February and May of last year at Brooklyn Recording Paradise. It’s their second full-length album since 2017’s Here Comes the Hangover. They really strive to keep the spirit of New York punk alive. You can hear credibility and authenticity within their sound. Their approach is fast, aggressive, and intense, built on ’80s hardcore, skate punk, and a traditional DIY mentality. Scarboro is everything a punk band should be: hardcore, aggressive, energetic and confrontational. They approach songwriting with an open mind.

Whether it’s political frustrations or personal struggles, the band tackles it all with the same intensity. Led by Shi, the band also features bassist Jack Counce and drummer Radhika George. Their approach is relentless; always ready to go and never too shy to state what’s on their mind.
