Sound can be a nice escape from a hectic, chaotic world, a fact that resonates with the members of Modern Holiday. The Brooklyn and Queens, New York-based band reveal their new single today, “Goodbye Grand Street.” It’s the follow-up release to “Shuttered Life,” which was released early last month.

Each song displays a little bit of something different from the band, with “Goodbye Grand Street” featuring more of a shoegaze, noise rock influence. Both songs will be featured on the band’s self-titled debut album, which they have been hard at work on. Currently, the album is slated for a May release, and it will highlight the wide range of indie rock influences that have helped shape the band’s sound.

Commenting on the new song, the band states:

“Sonically, ‘Goodbye Grand Street’ leans into our power-pop side, taking influences from Shake the Sheets-era Ted Leo and the Pharmacists and Blue-era Weezer to pair an upbeat, catchy core with rich layers of vocal harmonies to add warmth and lift. Beneath its bright energy is a current of nostalgia that mirrors the theme: celebrating what was, while stepping into what comes next.”

The current incarnation of Modern Holiday carries forth the group’s lifelong love of indie rock. They have always been particularly fond of slacker rock, with favourites including Pavement, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, and Suede. Their sound is known for blending blown-out guitars, hazy melodies, and sharp hooks, with power-pop sensibilities. It was only last year that the band officially formed. Featuring Jameson Edwards, Michael Horaz, Billy Gray, and recent addition Niko Siskos, the band is not afraid to get into difficult topics. Their songs discuss body image, politics, depression, anxiety, urban decay, and relationships.

The band name is meant to reflect the tension at the heart of their music. Music can act as your ticket away from an overwhelming world, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Through noise, melody, and shared catharsis, Modern Holiday would be so happy as to act as your breakaway from all of the chaos and craziness.
