Kyle Morgan Stands Up to His Past on “Ghost of a Problem” [Premiere]
No stranger to hard times, singer-songwriter Kyle Morgan premieres “Ghost of a Problem” the title track to his new record.
Difficult times often involve having difficult conversations, which Kyle Morgan does not avoid on his brand new record. Today marks the debut of “Ghost of a Problem,” the title track to his brand new full-length record.
The song is instantly relatable, as it grapples with the ghosts that linger, even if we feel deep down inside that the worst is behind us. That confessional style of songwriting stretches throughout the entirety of the album. Morgan’s intention is not necessarily to conjure up sadness and make you depressed. In fact, there are many moments of levity throughout the record. It’s more about standing up to your angst and uncertainty, with courage, acceptance, and determination.
Discussing “Ghost of a Problem,” Morgan states:
“The story of two friends, Johnny and David, reckoning in their own ways with the residual unease which lingers in the psyche and body long after a deep-rooted fear has been disproven or nullified – the cognitive dissonance arising from the contradiction between knowledge and feeling. When you know everything is ok, but you can’t shake the feeling that something is wrong.”
As an individual, Morgan is no stranger to the issues which he confronts throughout Ghost of a Problem. He has dealt personally with mental health issues at various points in his life. So he is familiar with the fallout and consequences of fighting with your own ghosts, confronting the skeletons in your closet, and dealing with your own internal struggles on a day-to-day basis. The songs on the record all look at mental health from different states of mind. From the anxious on “The Push,” to the manic and resigned on the title track, to the sarcastic and drained on “Paper Towel Ballad.”
This is Morgan’s sophomore album, the follow-up to 2022’s Younger at Most Everything. Mental illness has had a profound effect on his life, and this record is him navigating through that terrain. He goes to great lengths to avoid the pitfalls that are often characteristic of records such as this. Morgan made sure to sidestep the cliches and platitudes that are common in conversations surrounding these issues. He does not offer grand conclusions or easy answers. Just his own thoughts on some difficult topics for anyone interested in hearing them. Ghost of a Problem is like a car ride through Kyle Morgan’s mind that he is inviting you along on.
