Nomadic singer-songwriter JW Francis releases “Watery Road,” exploring the concept of using motion as a method for writing.

“Watery Road” reflects the natural environment rather than the restricted setting of a studio. Instead, its ideas take shape outdoors, in movement, in the spaces between places rather than arriving at them. It’s akin to an unfolding narrative, a story about journeys that are as internal as they are physical.

Last summer, Francis traveled the Mississippi River by canoe, sleeping along its banks and writing at night as towns blurred into one another. The music emerging from those evenings mirrors the milieu: humid air, brief encounters, landscapes that change yet remain the same. The songs aren’t romanticized. They are observances, followed by musical documentation.

The ambition of the project is extensive: with the approach of Route 66’s centennial and America’s 250th anniversary, Francis plans on traveling the highways and byways of America and detailing the things most of us never notice. For example, what it’s like to keep moving while the ground is shifting.

JW Francis has amassed over 20 million streams, earned regular rotation on SiriusXMU, been featured by BBC Radio 6, BBC Radio 1, KEXP, and received editorial support across major DSP playlists. His previous releases charted in the UK, including a Top 20 UK Independent Album Chart debut, while his relentless touring schedule – often 100+ shows per year, self-booked – has led to sold-out performances from Chicago to London, Paris, and Berlin.

“Watery Road” rolls out on a bounce-lite, folk-rock rhythm, revealing the warmth of a feel-good tune. The syncopated beat, topped by Francis’ acoustic guitar and braying harmonica, infuses the song with a loose rambling sensation. Francis’ vocals invite comparisons to Bob Dylan, evocatively subdued, a bit deep, and gravelly.

Similar to his roving lifestyle, with “Watery Road,” JW Francis delivers a charismatic, satisfying, boundaryless song.
