John Sweenie Premieres His Album, ‘Mysticism for Intellectuals’
Highly skilled tenor saxophonist and jazz musician John Sweenie premieres his debut album, ‘Mysticism for Intellectuals.’
With the release of his debut album, you might say to John Sweenie that it’s about time. But for Sweenie, it’s more about it being the right time. Today marks the debut of the highly skilled tenor saxophonist’s debut record, Mysticism for Intellectuals.
Sweenie is no newcomer to the music scene, long ago establishing himself as a composer, session player, and live performer. For decades, he has been honing his craft, playing with a host of highly skilled musicians. Sweenie has become well-regarded for his high-energy performances, combining modern jazz and indie rock aesthetics. It didn’t matter the context; Sweenie has always just wanted to find opportunities to play. It has not gone unnoticed, as he has received many national awards in his native Canada for his musical excellence.
Touching on the release of the album and the context within which it was recorded, Sweenie says:
“It took me a long time to finally get a record out, and though it was frustrating to be a few decades into my career without a solo album, I’m really glad that my first album is this project. I have had the pleasure of working with a number of great bands, but these three musicians really brought something special to the project. We had only a single rehearsal together as a quartet as well, and then did the recording live without any extra takes!”
Mysticism for Intellectuals was recorded over the course of two nights at The Yardbird Suite in Edmonton, Alberta. It features Sweenie accompanied by Jean-Michel Pilc, Rémi-Jean Leblanc, and Richard Irwin, three enormously accomplished jazz musicians. The record is an interesting endeavour for its attempt to capture both individual and collective improvisation. The album is a meeting of method and instinct, a culmination of a nearly year-long working relationship between the band members. In that time, the individual musicians built up a lot of trust, chemistry, and also an ability to create spontaneity. Structurally, the recording is very cohesive, but it’s never bland or feels overly premeditated. Mysticism for Intellectuals is the sound of a band that is functioning at a whole other level of energy, efficiency, instinct, and maybe most of all, passion.
