Quick & Dirty: Jean Noir Answers a Collection of Random Questions
Fresh off the release of his single “Brad’s Cabana,” Jean Noir answers some random questions in our latest Quick & Dirty interview.
Los Angeles-based artist Jean Noir is carving out a sonic space where memory, place, and pop culture collide. With his latest single “Brad’s Cabana,” Noir leans into the sun-bleached imagery of Southern California, palm trees, vintage motels, and the lingering glow of late-night poolside conversations to craft a track that feels both cinematic and deeply personal. The song draws inspiration from the aesthetics of old Hollywood and the hazy nostalgia that has long defined the region’s cultural mythology, blending those visuals with Noir’s modern approach to songwriting.
At its core, “Brad’s Cabana” is about the emotional pull of nostalgia – how certain places, sounds, and moments can transport us back to a specific feeling in time. Noir uses the imagery of a fictional cabana as a metaphorical setting where memories blur together: carefree summers, fading friendships, and the bittersweet recognition that the past can never quite be recreated. The result is a song that feels like a postcard from another era while still resonating with contemporary listeners navigating their own reflections on identity and belonging.
With this release, Jean Noir continues to establish himself as an artist who understands the storytelling power of atmosphere. His music often moves beyond simple genre boundaries, weaving together elements of indie pop, alternative textures, and cinematic production to create immersive sonic landscapes. As Noir revisits the dreamy mythology of Southern California through “Brad’s Cabana,” he invites listeners into a world where nostalgia becomes both a creative lens and a deeply human experience.
Jean Noir joins us for a Quick & Dirty interview and answers some fun, random questions, allowing us to get to know him on a more personal level.
What’s your favourite article of clothing that you own?
Jean Noir: “I bought a cowboy hat recently. It’s easy to eye-roll the cowboy cosplay that you see so much of these days, but I think I get it now. There’s something that happens when you put the hat on.
Honourable mention: a vintage LA Athletic Club tie that was given to me when I sang in the Apollo Men’s Chorus, which is one of the oldest choral groups in Los Angeles. I don’t think we were very good, but Roddy Bottum from Faith No More was in it, so that helped. I sang Tenor II but should’ve been Tenor I.”
What is something that no one else seems to care very much about but drives you irrationally mad?
“Colour temperature. The transition from incandescent lighting to LED is just terrible. There are too many kelvins! Cities used to be so beautiful at night. I will cross state lines to find good incandescent bulbs.”
If you could have anything as a pet, what would it be?
“I’ve always wanted one of those cute little river otters.”

What was your first concert?
“When I was 10 or 11, I went to see Blink 182 and Madness at the Santa Barbara Bowl. The opener on that tour was The Aquabats, and if I remember correctly, their drummer, Travis Barker, filled in for Blink’s drummer that night. Suffice to say, I guess it worked out.”
If you could be a cartoon character, who would you be?
“For sure, Wile E. Coyote… and not just because coyotes feature in my recordings. I mean, to want anything as much as he wants that Road Runner. That level of sustained obsession. Like he’s trapped in a loop where his desire is the point. The world teaches us to desire things less, when in fact, maybe we should desire them more.”
How do you drink your coffee?
“Black. And then, when no one is looking, I ask for a little splash of oat milk.”
Favourite book of all time?
“East of Eden. It’s one of those books that meets you wherever you are in life. Also, I recently read Pure Colour by Sheila Heti, and it blew my mind. There’s an entire section of the book narrated by a leaf on a tree, and it works.”
What’s the best venue you have ever played and why?
“The Santa Barbara Bowl is my hometown venue. About ten years after that Madness concert, I got to play there, which was a real full-circle moment for me. My band was on a gruelling tour opening for the Bronx at the time, and I remember being at a health food store in Newark when our booking agent called. It was a good reason to come home.”
What’s your secret to great metal hair?
“The secret to all great hair is this: stop using shampoo. Just stop.”
