Québec-based Greenhouse Ensemble returns with Mezzanine, a bold and immersive new album that represents the culmination of several years of sonic exploration and collaborative composition. Building on the foundation of their debut album Rez-de-chaussée, the ensemble continues to refine a distinctive and cinematic sound that blends contemporary jazz with Québécois folk traditions and experimental textures.
The seven-member ensemble reunited in July 2025 to develop this new body of work, placing a strong emphasis on collective creation. Through workshops and compositional exercises, the group explored the rich timbral possibilities of their unique instrumentation, resulting in a cohesive and deeply expressive album.
Mezzanine highlights the ensemble’s core sonic identity, particularly its striking combination of fiddle, trumpet, and wordless voice, while expanding into new territories of sound design and rhythmic interplay. The album moves fluidly between intensity and introspection, tradition and innovation.
From the powerful opening track “Intégration” to the playful and energetic “A Whole Step Away,” and the evocative closing moments of “La p’tite toune à Rox,” the album offers a diverse and compelling listening experience. Each composition reflects a balance between individual artistry and collective vision.
Thematically, Mezzanine represents a new vantage point for the ensemble. If their debut was the foundation, this new release is the level above—a space for reflection, growth, and forward motion. The music looks back with clarity while reaching toward new creative horizons.
With Mezzanine, Greenhouse Ensemble continues to establish itself as a compelling voice in contemporary jazz, crafting music that is both rooted in tradition and globally resonant.
