Cory Blair Premieres Her Uplifting Single “Other Side”
Indie singer-songwriter Cory Blair premieres her debut single “Other Side,” the first single from her debut EP ‘Midheaven.’
Our premiere of Cory Blair’s new single “Other Side” is more than just an unveiling of a new song. It’s more like an introduction to a new artist and one that is worthy of your attention. “Other Side” is Blair’s debut single, a catchy little indie pop track that acts like a statement of intent of who she is as an artist.
The meaning of the song is rather open-ended, definitely intentional from a musician looking to define herself but not be too forceful or overbearing. It’s a nicely put-together song and one that flows more confidently than you would expect from an artist’s first single. Blair seems quite sure of herself and not at any loss for how to proceed.
Discussing the song, Blair states:
“I wrote ‘Other Side’ about saying goodbye to friends and that bittersweet feeling when you know you’re not going to see someone for a long time. I think it relates to the same feelings of loss and grief when you lose someone you love. The song is a hopeful reminder that you’ll see them again, even if it’s not right now, they’re always there in a way, watching over you. I wrote this song as a celebration. It had to feel uplifting and anthemic; it’s a reminder that it’s a journey of self-evolution. The lyric ‘I feel a little bit shaky and a little bit stronger’ is an honest sentiment; through pain you get stronger. There is this point when you find peace with the distance, and you move forward with trust in the relationship. It’s really only just a ‘see you later.’”
“Other Side” acts as the first single to Cory Blair’s debut EP Midheaven, due for release on August 7th. All of her spirit and soul have gone into the formation of these songs. They came together organically and sequentially, dating back to late December 2023 when she first wrote “Other Side.” Based in New Jersey, Blair had a previous musical existence, playing in indie bands. The next day, after the idea for “Other Side” came to her, she left for Ireland with the intention of rejoining a band she had been playing with. Those plans fell by the wayside after the sudden death of a close friend of the band led to the tour being cancelled. It was a lonely time for Blair, and she felt alone, both personally and musically.
This was all she needed to point her towards writing her own songs in a way that felt true to her. The songs on Midheaven began as notes to herself, many written while she was living in Berlin. While playing in a band, she craved her own musical outlet, which led to her cutting a bunch of demos. Eventually, these demos provided the framework for a serious push into recording and production. The songs on Midheaven revolve around themes of grief, distance, homecoming, and the passage of time. It feels very personal because it is, and she hopes that it acts as an easy entry point for curious listeners. Relatable, well-conceived, and musically astute, Cory Blair has all the ingredients for success.
