A grind, a highway, a bitch… Life can be thought of in so many ways. How about a climb, the chosen adjective selected by Cook Allender for his brand new single. “Climb” is the new single from the Nashville-based Allender, coming to you ahead of the release of his debut album, Music Your Parents Hate. The song is fairly self-explanatory, one about breaking free and challenging yourself. Routine can bog you down and take your focus away from what matters. It’s important to stay focused and keep your mind on the “climb,” while also not being too stubborn to rely on others. Musically, “Climb” is a straight-ahead rocker, powered by a driving guitar riff, a more traditional-sounding rock track that will remind you of alternative rock from the ’90s.

Commenting on his new single, Allender states:

“‘Climb’ is about getting out of your comfort zone, facing fear, and realizing you can’t do everything alone. No one is an island. It’s about helping each other throw that rope and climb. Right when you think, ‘I can’t do this, I’m over my head,’ that’s when it all becomes worth it. Every trial is a forging of the soul. That’s what ‘Climb’ is.”

It’s not surprising that “Climb” features many elements of ’90s rock, considering it’s the era that made Allender into the artist he is today. He has been a lifelong lover of the era of grunge, post-grunge, Britpop, etc. It goes way back to his youth, when at age seven, he was already writing original music. Despite his love of music, it wasn’t always a career option for him. Allender meandered in and out of short-term careers in finance, the military, and the film industry. But through it all, music always reigned supreme for him, and he couldn’t resist its pull.

Allender writes, produces, and directs all of his own music and visuals. Music Your Parents Hate will be released on May 15th via VibraHive Records and Symphonic Distribution. It will be a fairly traditional rock record, loud, melodic, and built to be energetic. It features big riffs, driving rhythms, and a gritty, accessible sound. If there’s any lesson to glean from Allender’s experiences, it’s that it’s never too late to pursue your dream. He went back to music when others would have been too fearful of the unknown. And he is now living the life he was always meant to.
