Casper Sage – ‘PATiNA’ [EP] [Album Review]
With ‘PATINA,’ Casper Sage reminds us of the miracle and ache of love, the thrill of simply being alive, and the wonder of aging beautifully.
With his new EP PATINA, alt-R&B artist Casper Sage offers proof of life after going through a significant romantic relationship that eventually imploded. The EP reveals the patina, the residue that remains after the decay process sets in.
Sage explains, “‘PATINA’ is about aging tastefully. ‘PATINA’ is a positive reframe of the existential dread that comes with getting older. The war on nostalgia. Sun-fade on your favorite jeans is ‘PATINA.’ Old couples with young love is ‘PATINA.’ A newfound meaning in an old tattoo is ‘PATINA.’ Finding a space for your inner child in your adult life is ‘PATINA.’ It’s what lasts the test of time.”
Sage’s sound features blurry guitars that suggest indie-rock seriousness, soft-swell synths that reveal emotional depth, and layered drums. It’s a sound engineered to feel intimate. When Sage’s melodies harden, the songs snap into focus, exuding a delicious, misty feel that envelopes listeners.
PATINA follows on the heels of 2025’s SAGEhaven, which benefited from the advent of outside voices: “Roadrunner” with midwxst and “NuDivision” with Amindi—pushing the music toward cleaner colors and more defined shapes. SAGEhaven turned out to be a cusp of transition for Sage, allowing him to find his voice.
Of the seven tracks on PATiNA, entry points include “a distant memory,” rolling out on gleaming, luminous synths riding potent percussion as Sage’s dreamy, gliding vocals imbue the lyrics with urgent poignancy.
The juxtaposition of stark, choppy tones against the soulful voice of Sage gives “I’m dying to feel alive again” an irresistible edginess that takes on smoother borders when the rambling, rumbling-lite percussion enters. On this track, there’s an invitational sensation to the harmonics.

A personal favorite because of its crunching, syncopated rhythm and soft, drifting flow that shifts to a more muscular cadence, “Change your mind” combines a variety of sonic elements into a satisfying track.
“Give me room to go and fly / I’ll give you room to change your mind / If you want to, want to / You’ll always be a guest of mine.”
“Arthur” rides a kind of raw, ’80s-flavored R&B sound that resonates with heady surfaces that dip and swirl. For some reason, this track conjures up memories of Phil Collins. Probably because of the finessed, rounded percussion. Perhaps the best track on the EP, “Arthur” shows off Sage’s gift for composition.
With PATINA, Sage reminds us of the miracle and ache of love, the thrill of simply being alive, and the wonder of aging beautifully.
