If you trace Betty Moon’s musical career back to where it began, you’ll notice some common themes. The most significant that you’ll likely notice is her determined artistic independence. She has always conducted herself with focus and integrity, never compromising her vision for anything except the pursuit of the highest art possible. Another you will recognize is the confidence she exudes in her music. A lot of heart and thought go into writing these songs, and that’s clearly apparent when you listen to their richness and their depth.

That’s all on display on Betty Moon’s brand new EP, Strangely Beautiful. Featuring six new tracks, this is her first record of original material since Cosmicoma in 2021. It represents a brand new chapter in her long and illustrious career, featuring a diversity of songwriting and production styles and musical influences. It’s a combination of alternative pop energy with layered electronics and soulful undertones. In addition to five original tracks, Moon has also taken this opportunity to offer her own interpretation of Portugal, The Man’s hugely popular single “Live in the Moment.”

Contextualizing her new EP, Moon tells us:

Strangely Beautiful really came out of that space where everything feels a little chaotic but also kind of meant to be. I’ve always trusted my instincts in the studio, and this EP was about letting things flow naturally, not overthinking it, just following the energy and seeing where it goes. There’s a mix of grit, sensuality, and a bit of that cinematic escape I love to play with. I wanted each track to feel like its own world, but still connected, like chapters in the same story. At the end of the day, I’m just making the music I want to hear, and hopefully people can tap into that vibe and make it their own.”

Currently based in Los Angeles, Betty Moon experienced a good part of her early success in Canada. She was a local cult hero of the Toronto music scene in the heyday of the ’90s alternative revolution. Her career has gone through many phases, which have coincided with many variations to her musical style. She has released more than ten records now, exploring different blends of rock, pop, soul, and electronic.

Strangely Beautiful is an opportunity to experience Moon in a more reflective mood. The songs explore themes of change, vulnerability, and reinvention. That same fearlessness that has guided her forward is implanted in these songs as well. With her DIY spirit and resilient spirit, Moon is thrilled to be releasing new music again. The EP is representative of an artist who knows what she wants and where she wants to go, while still remaining true to the indie spirit that inspired her in the first place.
