Montreal-based drummer, composer, and producer Alexis Martin steps forward as a bandleader with the release of Les pôles Volume 1, available worldwide on Friday, May 15, 2026.
Long recognized for his work in film and television, Martin brings his distinctive compositional voice into a deeply personal and expansive musical setting. Les pôles Volume 1 sits at the intersection of contemporary jazz and cinematic soundscapes, offering a collection of evocative instrumental works that explore transformation, memory, and emotional connection.
The album’s title reflects its central theme: much like the Earth’s shifting magnetic poles, these compositions inhabit a constantly evolving emotional landscape. Each piece captures a moment of transition—whether the suspended stillness following life-changing news, the wonder of childhood, or the search for comfort and renewal.
Featuring an ensemble of some of Quebec’s most expressive and inventive musicians—including Emie R. Roussel (piano), Mathieu Désy (bass), Marie-Josée Frigon and André Leroux (saxophones), Jean-François “Fafoui” Gagnon (trumpet), and Sheila Hannigan (cello)—the album creates a rich and nuanced sonic palette.
With its lyrical depth and cinematic breadth, Les pôles Volume 1 invites listeners on an introspective journey—one that balances openness, imagination, and emotional resonance.
Les pôles Volume 1 marks the first release in a planned series of recordings from the Alexis Martin Ensemble.
