Opeth closed their “The Last Will and Testament Tour” in Vancouver last week at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Centre.

The Swedish progressive metal band brought their lengthy songs and sound to a rowdy Vancouver crowd that saw them for the last time on May 7th, 2022, when they played with Mastodon and Khemmis.

Katatonia, another Swedish heavyweight, is opening for the tour. They kicked off their set with “Thrice” and “The Liquid Eye,” both from their latest project, Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State.

Jonas Renkse, lead vocalist, thanked the fans who showed up early to enjoy their set and those who have supported them throughout their career. Continuing with their set, they closed with “In the Event of” and “Forsaker.”

Opeth took the stage at 9:00 pm sharp, earlier than most headliners at the venue, though necessary to accommodate their famously long songs. They opened with “§1,” the first single from their latest album, which shares its name with the tour.

They proceeded to perform two more songs from the album, “§7” and “§3.” The arena was loving every second of it, and a small section of the crowd was moshing during the performance.

They performed songs from almost their whole discography, from as early as My Arms, Your Hearse, with “Demon of the Fall” and “Godhead’s Lament” from Still Life. Both records were released over 25 years ago.

They closed their set with “The Grand Conjuration” and “The Drapery Falls,” but after a standing ovation from the fans, they returned to the stage and performed “Deliverance,” closing the first leg of the tour in style and with the adulation they deserved.
