Odd Marshall Premieres His Down-to-Earth Single, “Way Out”
With the premiere of his new single “Way Out,” Odd Marshall reminds us that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.
At a certain point in nearly everyone’s life, people tend to get caught up with fantasies of what could be, but, as Odd Marshall reminds us on his new single “Way Out,” the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.
A straightforward rocker with some groovy guitar playing courtesy of former Blind Melon guitarist Rogers Stevens, “Way Out” deals with the restlessness of life and deciding how to find your way. As Marshall states quite bluntly in the song, for now, “we all hate where we are.” But where we are might actually be the right place for us, at least in that moment in time.
Discussing the song, Marshall states:
“‘Way Out’ is a claustrophobic song, written while I was living in London. A lot of my songs from my time in London are uptight and uptempo. It’s about quitting and leaving. And when you’re leaving a city with as much to offer as London, you can’t help but feel like you’re making a mistake. London really does represent the world. It’s the busiest intersection in the world.
“I sing, ‘There’s a New World if you want it / But it’s only gonna get you out.’ If you’re dealing with personal/mental/existential issues, they will follow you. Trust me, they do. A change of scenery doesn’t always improve things. It was in a period of my life where I moved too much and threw myself into too many new situations, where I became desensitized to new people, places and opportunities. I never want that to happen again.”
You’ll find “Way Out” on Odd Marshall’s upcoming album Seconds. Due out March 6th, this is the follow-up to his debut album Sand & Glue, released just over a year ago (check out our exclusive Track-by-Track rundown of the album with Marshall). The aforementioned Rogers Stevens was a significant contributor to this album as a guitarist. Marshall also received help from other top-notch musicians, the likes of Mathias Schneeberger of The Afghan Whigs, Foo Fighters keyboardist Rami Jaffee, and producer Christopher Thorn, also of Blind Melon.
Featuring eight new songs, Seconds is a nice modern mix of alternative, folk rock, and Americana. It shifts gears depending on the song, not staying too devoted to any one genre. The songs were written over an extended period of time. They were selected specifically with Thorn and Stevens in mind, chosen in an effort to enable their contributions to shine. It’s the first project that Stevens and Thorn have played on outside of Blind Melon, which speaks to their belief in Marshall as a songwriter and composer.
That belief in Marshall is well earned. He has really hit his stride as a songwriter, conjuring up a set of songs that repackage ’90s rock into something fresh and modern.
