John Galea Premieres His Gospel-Inspired Single, “SONGWRITER”

When you take a quick review of John Galea’s musical career, what might stand out the most is his dedication to his craft. Galea has been toiling away for 15 years now, working his way up in the industry and honing his craft. With his new single “Songwriter,” Galea is about to take his career to a whole new level. The song is the first to come from the singer-songwriter’s long-awaited debut full-length album. There’s still a little while to wait, with the album due out early next year. But in the meantime, we have “Songwriter” to enjoy, a gospel-oriented song written by Galea. It shows his range as a songwriter and the evolution of him as a songwriter, as compared to his earlier work.

Discussing the songwriting process, Galea states:

“‘Songwriter’ was one of the longest songs I’ve taken to write, and probably now my favourite. It’s taken literally years! I have had so many versions that have had different hooks or vibes, and they just didn’t feel right. Then, finally writing my first album, I sat down at my piano, and the song just fell into place. The song is all about sharing whatever you have with the most special person in the world.”

Galea has recently been working with a lot of different folks in the music industry. He has been working with some top producers and songwriters, learning from them, and applying that to his own work. Some of the people Galea has been working with include the Grammy-nominated production team The Monarch and the Los Angeles-based record label Beluga Heights. It’s been a natural progression for Galea, now over a decade since he began to establish himself with a series of EP releases.

A musician for nearly his whole life, Galea began writing songs when he was 13. He won a UK National Songwriting Contest with his track “I Am Not an Angel,” and a role as a songwriter just began to take shape from there. He has written songs for artists like Lao Ra, Theo Garrett, and Gianluca Bezzina. Galea has also never been shy about experimenting with new and different sounds. In the spring of 2024, he released the EP The Art of Collaboration, a collaborative effort between Galea and a bunch of rappers and singers. To be a good songwriter, you not only need creativity, but you also need a certain fearlessness to try new things. Galea has both in abundance, as he forges on with the skills and vision necessary to be one of his scene’s most respected music makers.
