Songs like Hunch Power’s “Does It Hurt?” speak to the power and importance of music as a therapeutic tool that can be used for unity and solidarity. The Nottingham, England band have never been shy about using their music as a platform for what’s important to them. “Does It Hurt?” specifically is a song about emotional abuse and mind games. The band’s seventh proper single, it is an anthem that’s particularly relatable and also helps bring awareness to the fact that a lot of young people’s lives are consumed by various types of abuse. The lyrics are bold and inquisitive, and lines like “those who can’t stand the heat shouldn’t go around starting fires” would be obvious rallying cries in a live setting.
Cleverly put together, the clip is a combination of a performance and a lyric video. It combines the lyrics with shots of the band performing the song. The footage is actually taken from video that was shot during Hunch Power’s charity fundraiser for War Child that took place this past December in London.
Elaborating on the song, the band states:
“We decided to record and release this song as soon as we tried it in our home studio. It felt very solid straightaway, and that gave us a lot of confidence as a unit. It’s very intense throughout its three minutes and 20 seconds, so you need to stay very focused. It’s quite fast as well, so it flies by quickly. Blink, and you’ll miss it!
“Some of us experienced emotional abuse and witnessed toxic relationships as kids, so it felt necessary to write about that at some point. It’s painful to think that it’s still so relevant. We wonder how many people out there will be able to relate. Using music to channel trauma helps, so we hope this song can help others, too.”
Hunch Power is an interesting band with a versatile approach. They embody the energy of punk rock and the genre’s anthemic tendencies. But they also explore new genres like jazzcore, and their songwriting comes from a more introspective place, like in folk music. That punk rock energy is always very well featured when the band plays live. Their hooks are catchy, and their energy is genuine. The band shows that you can have something important to say while also emphasizing that rock n’ roll is ultimately all about having a good time.
