Finely Tuned Elephant Charge Ahead with Their Album ‘No Goats’ [Premiere]

As a band, Finely Tuned Elephant is a testament to the fact that you really don’t need words to say a lot. Exhibit A is their brand new record, No Goats, which we are premiering today.

The instrumental jazz-rock outfit has gone all out with this new set of songs. Filled with substance, colour, spirit, and energy, these are some of the most dynamic jazz instrumentals you’ll ever hear. With all of its charisma, it would be inaccurate to call this merely a jazz record. It is more of a fusion album, bringing together different influences and putting them to use under one roof.

Contextualizing the album, guitarist and composer Jordan Robinson states:

“No Goats is the product of four years and four musicians working together to create something unique in the space of the jazz fusion world. Everyone in the group came together to use all of their highly versatile skill sets and produce something exciting, fresh, and musical. I’m very proud of the work we’ve accomplished together, and I’m grateful to be working alongside such talented musicians.”

Each track featured on No Goats builds off of the others to create one larger cinematic journey. They were written in an attempt to inspire the listener’s imagination and encourage a higher level of listening experience. It’s very much in line with Finely Tuned Elephant’s overall artistic mission: to write songs that are both elaborate and exquisite, but also easily accessible and brimming with personality.

What’s new about No Goats is the communal approach the group employed while writing it. It is the first record that has been written with contributions from the band’s full touring lineup. With more input from more contributors, it modified the recording dynamics, while also enabling each member to provide their own unique contribution. The band employed a layered approach to songwriting and collaboration. They would lay the groundwork for each track, and then build layer upon layer until everyone was happy with the finished product. What you get is a cohesive, nuanced, and interdependent-sounding album.

No Goats stands as the most definitive statement yet from Finely Tuned Elephant. It is the result of four artists coming together with a unified mission to make the best piece of music possible.
