Liverpool crowds can either be absolutely wild or really quiet. I was warned before Scottish metallers Bleed From Within took to the stage at the O2 Academy for the latest date on their ‘The Dying Sun’ tour. Well, with the news that all three bands, Bleed From Within, plus their two supports Baest and Disembodied Tyrant, were delayed travelling over from Dublin, fans were left with only the headliners able to perform and delayed doors, meaning there was nothing to do except sit in the bar and sink a few pints before the Scots ripped up the venue.

What that also meant was that, two and a half hours after doors opened, when the Scots strode out into the packed Academy and slammed into opener “Zenith,” the room erupted into one big moshpit. With security overworked, dealing with crowd surfers only two songs in, “The End of All We Know” saw the band joined by Disembodied Tyrant frontman Blake Mullins.

Bleed From Within frontman Scott Kennedy smiles as he oversees the chaos ensuing in the pit in front of him while his bandmates make it look all too easy as, combined, they tear through absolute bangers like “Violent Nature,” “God Complex,” and “I Am Damnation,” all highlights from a bruising fourteen-song set.

Even though tonight was full of the kind of stresses you could do without as a band on the first night of your UK run, Bleed From Within, the two supports, and their respective crews made sure that the gathered masses in Liverpool still got plenty of crunch for their ticket. What could have been a complete disaster ended up being a great showcase for the British metal scene by a band that never fails to disappoint.

I have an unhealthy obsession with bad horror movies, the song Wanted Dead Or Alive and crap British game shows. I do this not because of the sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll lifestyle it affords me but more because it gives me an excuse to listen to bands that sound like hippos mating.
