Elusive, complex, tricky, intricate; love is all of these things, and at the root of Austin Gatus’ latest single, “Love Can Only Take You So Far.” Today marks the premiere of the song’s accompanying music video, a reflective, introspective, and tender portrayal of lost love. It features Gatus portraying a perspective of losing love to destiny by splitting the main character into dual identities. One is portrayed in light, while the other is depicted in darkness. While navigating their respective voids, both characters feel like they have lost a piece of themselves. But there is a common light that each void shares that they are drawn to. It ultimately leads them back to each other, and they each come to terms with their situation.

Both “Love Can Only Take You So Far” and its video are quite revealing as to the type of person Gatus is. He is a hopeless romantic, always reaching out for love, steadfast in his pursuit of it. His songs come from very personal places, inspired by his experiences and his hopes and dreams. As a survivor of childhood cancer, Gatus has been through a lot in life. He has proceeded through each challenge with faithfulness and optimism, never getting too far ahead of where he was.

Discussing the song’s backstory and development, Gatus states:

“The inspiration behind ‘Love Can Only Take You So Far’ came from fighting to make a long-distance relationship work while still aiming to achieve career goals. There came a point where my partner and I were finding success in our own cities, and while our feelings for each other stayed mutual, we faced the struggle of finally coming together to break that long-distance barrier. The title comes from the idea that the emotion of love in a relationship is just a small aspect of the broad perspective. Through the lyrics, I aimed to tell the story of a ‘positive’ breakup song where there’s a common understanding and the hurt comes from not being able to be there for each other, rather than any sense of one-sided bitterness. My favourite lyric in particular is the final line, ‘We’ll take time to mend as we try to understand that love can only take us so far.’ I think it really summarizes the spirit of what the song is about.”

He continues, adding: “After writing the chorus of the song, I took it to my producer, David Li, to flesh out the concept more. We discussed the instrumentation and mood we wanted to move forward with. We had settled on the idea of having it sonically driven by a live band sound, using a lot of acoustic instruments. Being a musician myself, it was a lot of fun being part of the recording sessions and watching everyone excel at their craft. David covered much of the core rhythm section, while Liam Wallace and João Perrusi drove the energy with drums and electric guitar.

“Love Can Only Take You So Far” is the title track to Austin Gatus’ upcoming EP, due out in late 2026. It will feature a collection of love songs about navigating, maintaining, and losing a long-distance relationship. Not interested in getting trudged down by hopelessness and negativity, it is a hopeful breakup record. It focuses on growth and the realization that love can only take you so far if it’s not the right time. In the end, the two people in the relationship realize it’s better to part ways. They wind up in different cities, living separate lives. It’s all very relatable, ideal for those immersed in young love, trying to find their own way forward.
