Two Dark Birds – ‘Dreamers of the Golden Dream (Vol. 1)’ [Album Review]
Highlighted by introspective narratives, Two Dark Birds’ ‘Dreamers of the Golden Dream (Vol. 1)’ (Vfib Records) comprises a series of noteworthy indie-folk songs.
Indie-folk outfit Two Dark Birds releases their new album, Dreamers of the Golden Dream (Vol.1), which was recorded live at The Woods Studio near Woodstock, New York. Two Dark Birds is led by songwriter Steve Koester and drummer Jason Mills.
Produced by Todd Adelman and Steve Koester, the album features the talents of Josh Roy Brown, Tyler Wood, Iris Koester, Mark Lerner, Jeff Hill, and harmony contributions from Syd Straw, Don Piper, Mark Rozzo, and Tim Buckley.
Formed in 2008, Two Dark Birds has been featured in elite media outlets. Their sound sits somewhere between The Band and Bon Iver, with hints of Tom Petty appearing occasionally. Some might call it space-cowboy-folk music.
Made up of nine tracks, entry points on the album include the opening track, “Girl of Summer,” narrating an intimate interlude, now past, that reveals savors of dark, wistful nostalgia. Imperfectly delicious vocal harmonies give the tune an overwhelming sense of authenticity. The low, shadowy surfaces of the melody evoke a lonely poignancy.
Vaguely reminiscent of The Band, “Born To Fall” is both dark and sad, a tale of the unforgiving side of life. A crying guitar, at times almost psychedelic in color, augments the soft, slightly sympathetic vocals.
“But Bea, she never caught a break at all / Some are born to wealth and grace / Some are born to document this place / And some are just born to fall.”

The low-slung, gloomy feel of “Sunbruise” escorts listeners like a folksy dirge, utterly emotionally raw yet strangely irresistible. Whereas “A Brief Defense of Love” divulges a Dire Straits-like energy – light yet swaying atop an inviting melody. There’s a spacey, dreamy sense to the song that’s magnified by French lyrics.
“Jesus Is A Tree” conjures up The Band covering The J. Geils Band while trying to sound like The Steve Miller Band. The song rolls and trundles on a fat bassline and crunching percussion.
“The Song To End It All” ends the album with a song that begins with a caveman, travels through the time of Jesus, and culminates with the narrator humming a song from 1985. It’s a search for the secret to life, the meaning of life, for something to give significance to the madness of the world.
