Circus Mind – “Viking Princess” [Song Review]
Dripping with sleazy blues and oozing beaucoup swagger, with “Viking Princess,” Circus Mind delivers one of their best songs.
Indie rock-funk collective Circus Mind unveils their new single, “Viking Princess,” a bluesy, psychedelic tune that narrates a tale of the house guest from hell, someone who essentially moves in, takes over your life, and gives no indication of ever leaving.
Songwriter, vocalist, and keyboardist Mark Rechler explains, “Just imagine the worst, loudest, stinkiest house guest you ever had and multiply it by a factor of 10 and you have the Viking Princess. You may still love that person, but eventually you need them to leave to maintain your sanity.”
Along with Rechler, Circus Minid is made up of Brian Duggan (guitar), Michael Amendola (sax), Mathew Fox (bass), Steve Finkelstein (percussion), and Dan Roth (drums).
“Viking Princess” ploughs forward with volume, wit, and a gleeful lack of restraint. It’s both playful and cathartic— a song for anyone who realizes it’s time to say, “Get out!”
“Viking Princess” rolls out on ZZ Top-like guitars, fusing gritty, swamp-soaked blues drenched in a lysergic haze, riding atop a potently nasty rhythm. Rechler’s vocals, vaguely reminiscent of Billy Gibbons, imbue the lyrics with delicious boggy timbres. The track’s wild energy is pushed even further by guest guitarist Scott Metzger (Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, LAMP), whose scorching licks infuse the tune with extra weight and attitude. Noel Lustgarden’s harmonica cuts through with a raw, soulful edge, investing the song with memorable beer-stained blues flavors.
Dripping with sleazy blues and oozing beaucoup swagger, with “Viking Princess,” Circus Mind delivers one of their best songs.
