Arm’s Length Open UK Tour with Packed-Out Show at Southampton Engine Rooms [Photos]
Arm‘s Length kick off their UK tour with a packed-out, upgraded show in Southampton, with superb support from Shoreline, Ben Quad, and Koyo.
Arm’s Length returned to Southampton for a much anticipated headline show at The Engine Rooms, marking a clear step up for the band and a strong statement about their growing popularity. This was the opening night of the tour and had originally been scheduled to be at The Joiners, a much smaller venue. The show was upgraded due to demand and nearly sold out even after the move. The decision proved justified long before the headliners took to the stage, with the crowd arriving early and filling the room quickly. By the end of the opening set, most of the venue was already packed.
Doors opened earlier than usual and the night wasted little time getting started. Shoreline were first on the bill and began almost instantly, setting the tone for a tightly run evening. The German band opened with “Needles” from their 2024 album To Figure Out, immediately drawing the attention of the early crowd. Their sound struck a great balance between being catchy and detailed, and it really suited the bigger room. The crowd seemed fully on board, giving them a warm and genuinely engaged response. They closed with “Bent Broken” from their debut album Eat My Soul, finishing strong and clearly winning over those who had arrived early.
Next up were Ben Quad. Unfortunately, the band encountered technical issues which delayed the start of their set and resulted in it being cut slightly short. Despite this setback, they handled the situation well and did not let it affect their performance once things were resolved. When the set finally began, Ben Quad launched into it with high energy and little hesitation. Edgar Viveros on guitar especially brought the energy, jumping and kicking his way through the set. At one point the band even joked about battling jet lag, but you would not have guessed it from their performance. This marked their first time playing shows in the UK, yet they were greeted by a crowd that already seemed familiar with their material. Several people near the front sang along enthusiastically, suggesting that their arrival had been eagerly anticipated. Even with the shortened set, Ben Quad made a strong impression and hopefully this will not be the last time they visit.
Koyo followed and brought a noticeable shift in intensity. The hardcore outfit from Long Island did exactly what was expected of them, injecting the room with relentless energy. They opened with “Moriches” and immediately set the crowd in motion. The first crowd surfer of the night made their way over the barricade early in the set, signalling that things were stepping up a gear. Lead singer Joey Chiaramonte was constantly on the move, running up and down the stage and swinging the wired microphone as he urged the crowd on. The atmosphere was loud, arms in the air, singing along, with the band feeding off the response. They closed their set with “Ten Digits Away”, leaving the room buzzing and well warmed up for the headliners.
Finally, it was time for Arm’s Length to take the stage. Their last appearance in Southampton had been on a co-headline tour with One Step Closer at The Joiners, and tonight was originally set to take place there as well. The venue upgrade felt symbolic of how far the band have come since that last visit, which was less than two years ago. The crowd’s response as they appeared made it clear that many had been waiting for this moment.
Arm’s Length played a varied set that balanced new material with older favourites. They opened with “Funny Face” from their latest album There’s a Whole World Out There,” a choice that immediately drew a strong reaction. The band sounded comfortable and confident, filling the larger room with ease. Several songs from the new album followed, including “The Weight” and “The World,” both of which were met with enthusiastic reactions. “Fatal Flaw” stood out as the clear highlight of the set, earning one of the biggest responses of the night as the crowd sang back every word.
The band’s connection with the audience was strong throughout. They seemed relaxed but confident, and they had that special ability to have the attention of the entire room.
In conclusion, Arm’s Length headlining The Engine Rooms felt like the perfect progression for them. From the early arrival of the crowd to the near sell-out status of the upgraded venue, the night reflected the strength of the lineup and the dedication of the audience. Each band played their part in building the atmosphere, and by the time Arm’s Length closed the show, it was clear that Southampton had fully embraced them. If this show was any indication, it is unlikely they will be playing smaller rooms here again anytime soon.
