Whitelands have released their new single “Blankspace”, offering the latest preview of their forthcoming second album Sunlight Echoes, which is due for release on January 30th.

“Blankspace” marks the fourth single to be taken from Sunlight Echoes and sees the London-based shoegaze band lean into a darker, more abrasive edge than the overt pop sensibilities heard on some of their recent releases. While retaining the melodic immediacy that has come to define Whitelands’ sound, the song is underpinned by a heavier emotional weight and a sense of urgency that reflects its subject matter.

Speaking about the track, vocalist Etienne Quartey-Papafio explained the personal circumstances that informed the song:

“I was faced with mortality and very difficult things. I’m still not sure how to talk about it.”

Bassist Vanessa Govinden expanded on the meaning behind the single, adding:

“It’s about coming face-to-face with death, grief and mortality. This one song became a way to carry all of that heaviness.”

Alongside the release, the band have shared a striking visualiser for “Blankspace,” created by Whitelands guitarist Michael Adelaja.

Whitelands will tour across the EU and UK throughout February, beginning with a show in Paris on February 6, before returning to the UK for a series of headline dates.

I have an unhealthy obsession with bad horror movies, the song Wanted Dead Or Alive and crap British game shows. I do this not because of the sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll lifestyle it affords me but more because it gives me an excuse to listen to bands that sound like hippos mating.
