silent collision – ‘Air Vent Lullabies’ [EP] [Album Review]
Like a wonderful collage, on ‘Air Vent Lullabies,’ silent collision balances ambient textures against fluxing spectral atmospherics.
Air Vent Lullabies, the new EP from alternative artist silent collision, blends elements of slowcore, ambient, alt-pop, and indie-rock into atmospheric music made up of “silence and space.”
“‘Air Vent Lullabies’ began with a very small, very ordinary moment. Lying awake in the middle of the night, stretched out on the floor of a quiet hallway, listening to the hum of an air vent,” explains silent collision.
According to silent collision, “The goal of this EP was to recreate that feeling. Not by imitating it, but by using it directly.”
The sound was recorded and then bent, molded, and elongated into various frequencies and notes, making the sound itself into an instrument.
He goes on to note that “Look At The Sky” samples his song “A Light Emerges,” while “With the Stars” samples audio from his song “Storms Within Stillness.” “Exhale, Inhale” and “Air Vent Lullaby” include samples from his ambient compositions that will be released in 2026. The only track on the EP that’s a totally new composition is “Darkness Within Darkness.”
Of the half dozen tracks on the EP, highlights include “Look At The Sky,” a shimmering, creamy-textured tune that vibrates on subterranean tones that reside just under the surface. If you listen closely, you can hear the hum and flow of the air vent, sighing like a whisper.
A personal favorite because of its chill mood, “Exhale, Inhale” moves in and out, rising and falling, on a dense, throbbing melody. The dreamy, ethereal flow of “With The Stars” delivers both quiet and peaceful emotions, allowing listeners to drift through the luxuriant tiers of their minds.
“Darkness Within Darkness” shifts the atmospheric sensation of the EP with its plucking, resonant tones, tones that expand and slowly dissipate into floating, chiming milieus. There’s a mysterious, exotic aura to this track, making it another favorite because of its sensory impact on both ears and soul.
