SHDWCSTRS – ‘ALT/GEN’ [EP] [Album Review]
Seeking out new ways of connection and new emotional directions, SHDWCSTRS delivers a lustrous gem of an EP on ‘ALT/GEN.’
SHDWCSTRS releases his new EP, ALT/GEN, exploring the spaces, the blurry edges between electronic music and hip-hop via dark synths, hefty 808s bumping up against shadowy undertones, and rhapsodic melodies.
Talking about his sound and his music, SHDWCSTRS says, “I make music for people who’ve been through it — the ones still figuring it out, still trying to find their balance. In that process, I’m chasing a feeling. If the music doesn’t make you feel something, it’s just noise. SHDWCSTRS is about turning the chaos into rhythm and making the darkness sound alive.”
ALT/GEN follows on the heels of last year’s EP, PROJECT IV, disclosing the year-over-year evolution of SHDWCSTRS’ sound, as well as its immersive consistency and raw emotionalism.
Encompassing six tracks, entry points on ALT/GEN include “Swervin,” highlighted by an oscillating intro that flows into an atmospheric melody laced with throbbing surfaces and vague hints of chill jazz. There’s a groove to the rhythm that beckons listeners in with its hypnotic cadence.
There’s an exotic attraction to “Anamnesis Euphoria,” with its shifting, drifting textures and flickering topline. Leaning more into EDM than some of the other tracks, “TriDecka” simultaneously pushes and rumbles with alluring tones. The soft, oozing interlude gives the melody a luscious, tender aura.
Eerie and portentous, “Fakes (Z7 VIP)” evokes images of marionettes dancing and prancing on a stage shrouded in mystery. Whereas “Twice Over,” the closing track, reveals a sauntering trap-like rhythm, a remote, jazz-flavored sax, and layers of thick, nebulous textures.
Seeking out new ways of connection and new emotional directions, SHDWCSTRS delivers a lustrous gem of an EP.
