As an artist, Dar Stellabotta has a more traditional approach to songwriting. She has a deep appreciation for the history and legacy of rock music, and it shows in her new album, Into Thin Air. Interestingly enough, the album was primarily created with a cigar box guitar and farmer foot drum. By employing that kind of approach, it’s no wonder that Into Thin Air has a vintage sound.

In a climate of acts that sound rather similar, Dar Stellabotta is entirely distinctive. You’d be hard-pressed to find any other artist that sounds like this. She captures the spirit of rock n’ roll, while carving out her own niche. As a songwriter, she tends to get quite personal. Dar discusses life’s highs and lows, focusing primarily on self-discovery, personal growth, and the complexities of human relationships. She is very versatile in her approach, striking a nice balance between classic rock era and modern influences.

Today, we are joined by Dar Stellabotta to learn more about her as an individual.

If you lived in a city in medieval times, what would you be doing?

Dar Stellabotta: “I would most likely be a poor beggar who runs up to the nobles as they rode through the gates, asking them for alms. I can’t imagine myself any other way in medieval times. Just a poor beggar or a chambermaid being summoned to clean my lady’s chamber pot in the wee mornings.”

What’s something you know isn’t real, but wish existed?

“Time travel, because why not? Let’s go back and see what the dinosaurs really looked like. Fact-check some things in history! Maybe rewrite it! I feel like there are so many things in history that remain unrecorded, stories that slipped through the cracks. Humans write history, and one thing that is true with all humans is that we all have flaws and our own perception.”

What’s your favourite article of clothing that you own?

“Black jeans, so I blend in with the night! Constant stealth mode! I just feel like I will wear a different colour when they make a colour darker than black.”

If you could be any animal, what would you be and why?

“Either an eagle, because I think it would be awesome to have the ability to fly or a whale, so I can discover all the awesome things in the ocean that humans will never see.”

What historical event would you most like to have experienced firsthand?

“I would have liked to experience Woodstock in 1969. The bands were awesome, it was the summer of love, and people were on the bus! I would have definitely liked to see Jimi Hendrix, The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Joan Baez, Janis Joplin, Ritchie Havens and the rest of the greats!”

What’s the best purchase you’ve ever made?

“I think the best purchase I ever made was buying an 8-foot soft top surfboard. Where I live in Maryland, the waves don’t get super big and learning to surf or just surfing in general is way easier with a big soft top board. I have grown to love surfing because of this purchase.”

If your life were a book or movie, what would the title be?

“It would most likely be What in the Hell? because there is always something crazy going on. Being raised in a super conservative religious family with an Italian father just by itself is ‘What in the hell.’”

How do you drink your coffee?

“Black, no cream, no sugar. There are many benefits of black coffee. Such as it boosts brain function, lowers depression risk, promotes heart health, increases your metabolism, is rich in antioxidants, which protect cells from damage as well and many other awesome things that you need to stay healthy!”
