Our Lady Peace is currently on a mini Canadian tour, which brought them to the Great Canadian Casino Resort in Toronto last weekend for a night of rock.
The evening kicked off with Kasador, a four-piece indie rock band from Kingston. It can be tough being an opener for any show, let alone one in a casino where many concertgoers end up taking in some pre-show gambling. But Kasador did a great job warming up the early goers with their short and energetic set.
The room quickly filled up, and the crowd was eager for Our Lady Peace. There’s always something special about a hometown show! This past summer, OLP played a massive 30th anniversary tour, which concluded at Budweiser Stage in Toronto, a 16,000-capacity amphitheatre. This show, while definitely close to sold out, felt a lot more intimate with 5,000 seats. Though the venue was configured for seats for this concert, they certainly weren’t used much, with the crowd on its feet the entire performance.
Raine Maida commanded the stage with his intense energy and distinctive high tenor vocals. His banter was thoroughly enjoyed by the crowd, as he made several comments about Etobicoke (West Toronto) and the hometown show. Steve Mazur delivered all the recognizable riffs on guitar, while Duncan Coutts on bass and Jason Pierce on drums completed the classic and easily recognizable OLP sound. The staging was simple but effective, with the giant screen behind them showing clips to match the tones of the songs.
The connection between the band and fans was on point, with the crowd eagerly jumping in to sing choruses whenever Raine put the microphone their way. From “One Man Army” to “Clumsy,” Our Lady Peace delivered a packed one-and-a-half-hour set with 17 tracks covering pretty much their entire discography, as well as a cover of “Locked in the Trunk of a Car” by The Tragically Hip. The night concluded, as many Our Lady Peace shows do, with a strong encore and the crowd jumping along to “Starseed.” A fantastic night by one of Canada’s most enduring rock acts!
