For the statement they are out to make, Abronia could not have come up with a better title than “Weapons Against Progress” for their new single. The Portland-based psych band is back with a new single and accompanying music video that helps hone in on the point and purpose of the song. The haunting video was put together by band member and percussionist Rick Pedrosa.

Commenting on the song and the video, singer and saxophonist Keelin Mayer states:

“Riding into a landscape that has been burned by years of plastic, pollution, war, and greed. You’re trying to grow up and become an adult in this bleak landscape, watching billionaires jetting off into space, leaving your generation to clean up their mess.”

With the single out now, Abronia is putting the finishing touches on their forthcoming album. Shapes Unravel is set for release on February 20th via Cardinal Fuzz & Feeding Tube Records. Their fourth studio record, it features the band pushing further into feeling and composition. The album is both bold and ambitious, with moments of crushing weight that give way to eerie stillness. There are all kinds of sounds on this record, with additions of strings and brass, which create an orchestral depth that further widens the band’s sound.

Shapes Unravel also features some lineup changes, with certain members trading duties. James Shaver has moved over from drums to guitar, while Danny Metcalfe now mans the bass. Robert Grubaugh was previously working with the band in a touring capacity while on the road in Europe. He has now joined the band and taken over duties on the big drum. Mayer, Eric Crespo, and Pedrosa continue on with their previous duties.

Overall, Shapes Unravel feels like the culmination of a band that has honed in on exactly what it wants to be. Within that space, they continue to find ways to challenge themselves. This is a record that doesn’t sound like anything else you’re listening to. That uniqueness is part of what keeps Abronia moving forward as one of the most distinctive, refined psych rock acts out there.
