As genuine as they come, Warren Pash is an artist full of soul. You can categorize him and nitpick at what musical genre you think he fits into, but when you turn a song on like his new single “Step on the Wire,” you can feel the soul in every note and every word. Today marks the debut of the official “Step on the Wire” music video, featuring plenty of vintage television clips which fit perfectly with the song’s bluesy tone. The song comes from his latest studio offering, Sideshow Barkers, released in September via Deer Lodge Records. As impressive as you might expect coming from Pash, the album is also noteworthy for its diversity in sound, originality, and evolution from Pash’s previous work.

Commenting on “Step on the Wire,” Pash states:

“It’s about finding your groove, making your move, and not trying to prove. It’s not a preaching thing; I might as well have been talking to myself. It’s like a cat or a dog getting in a swimming pool for the first time. Hesitation becomes elation, and before you know it, you’re in the fun zone.”

In his many travels and stops along the way, Pash has always maintained his musical curiosity. Born and raised in Winnipeg and then Montreal, he has lived in Los Angeles, Portland, Nashville, and then Portland again. Along the way, he has absorbed sounds, stories, and quirks, as you might expect living in so many different subcultures. Pash has enjoyed an incredible career as a musician, constantly proving the wide range of his talents. Believe it or not, he was a co-writer of “Private Eyes,” the Hall & Oates number one single that has become a classic and is renowned as one of the best pop songs of the 1980s. He has also written songs for Carole King, Patti LuPone, and Rosco Gordon.

Pash has so much to offer on Sideshow Barkers. It defies categorization, pivoting from percussive folk-soul to unconventional pop with elements of Americana, psychedelia, and groove rock. It builds off the sound of his earlier solo records, Parts Unknown and Plastic Rulers. Sideshow Barkers is a thoughtful record, considering the role of community and identity, and the stories we believe in that help us get by. Pash displays a lot of veteran presence and wisdom on Sideshow Barkers without sounding pretentious or out of touch. The album finds humour in heartbreak and poetry in the weeds, all put together soundly by a man who has done it all, feeling comfortable and confident with his accomplishments and his current place as a person and an artist.
