Ogden trio The Proper Way is back with their original take on Phil Collins’ classic “In the Air Tonight.” It’s a stripped-down, heartfelt version that trades the big 80s drum fill for an honest and digestible approach with strings and character-rich vocals.

This song was a long time coming for the group. The band, composed of Scott Rogers, Shane Osguthorpe, and Carrie Myers, first started this recording way back in 2016, before The Proper Way even existed as a formal group. Rogers and Myers tracked the first parts in a basement studio, and over the years they kept tinkering with it, slowly shaping it into what we have today.

“It’s a little different from our normal productions, we all love how, at its core, it’s just us.”

Drummer Mike Lomax brought a fresh feel with parts inspired by Stewart Copeland’s work on Peter Gabriel’s “Red Rain.” Carrie re-recorded her vocals in 2025, showcasing how much vocal work has grown after years of performances and studio work.

When Osguthorpe added his keys, it finally sounded “proper”, much like the group’s name implies.

Their take on “In the Air Tonight” might be different from what fans expect, but that’s the point. It shows the band’s musical range, heart, and talent.
